Shadow

This place has an eerie quality to it.  You don’t know what made you come back here after all this time; all you do know is that now you are here you wish you weren’t.

A year has passed.  One long year and still the pain is as fresh as if it were yesterday.  His presence is here; everything is him.

It is hard to believe that laughter once echoed where silence now hangs; that light shone bright where shadows now fall.  So much joy; taken away in one brief moment.

People didn’t know what to say to you; what can you say?  Time heals?  Sorry?  They’re just words.  Shallow words.  They have no meaning.

You had so little time together; only just starting to learn about each other; to grow and explore with each other; to give and receive love.  All that is gone now.

You can’t cry, there’s nothing more to give.  But he’s here with you; a dull ache; a heavy dark spot in your heart; always there and always hurting.  You’ll continue loving and never forgetting him.  And you’ll miss him; Christ how you’ll miss him.

Two strong arms envelope you from behind, and you allow yourself to relax into their embrace and let the warmth and love encompass you.  No words pass between you as you stand there together, united in grief.  There is a silent understanding.

As you stand there together, but alone from the rest of the world, the memories come rushing back to you.  Memories of your two year old son; who was taken from you on this spot by a hit and run driver.
